Ralph was born on May 24, 1945 in Iowa City, the son of Ralph and Frances (Draker) Fountain. In 1964, he graduated from Regina High School where he had met the love of his life, Patricia Jenn. Shortly after high school, Ralph was drafted into the U.S. Army. From boot camp at Ft. Leonardwood, MO, the Army sent Spec. 4 Fountain to Bad Aibling, Germany. Upon his return to civilian life, Ralph popped the question and he and Pat were married on February 24, 1968, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City, IA.

Just prior to their first anniversary, they were blessed with a little bundle of joy – Julie Ann. That prompted them to buy their first and only home in Iowa City. Eighteen months after Julie showed up on the scene, Annette Marie arrived. Having two young girls must have taken its toll on them, because they waited another four years to bring a third baby into the fold – Ryan Edward. In order to keep the three of them in clothes, and fed, Ralph worked at Victor Metal and City Carton in Iowa City and eventually landed a job that he kept for almost 33 years at Oral-B Laboratories. His children were never without a toothbrush and still grab a handful from his stash when they are in town.

His gift was teaching, by his example, that hard work and ingenuity could move mountains. When he wasn’t fixing something at home or helping his neighbors, he was involved as an usher and Eucharistic minister at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, going to his grandchildren’s many sporting events, fishing at Lake McBride or playing a mean game of Liverpool Rummy or Taboo and putting puzzles together. He was the epitome of a loving, devoted husband to Pat and father and grandfather to the family. He always made sure to pick out a special piece of jewelry for Pat on their anniversary every year.

Ralph is survived by his wife, Pat; three children, Julie Rohlena, Annette (Eric) Arbogast, and Ryan (Jennifer) Fountain; seven grandchildren, Seth Rohlena , Brittney (Johnathan) Rakestraw, Isaac Rohlena, Allison Arbogast, Amber Rohlena, John Rohlena, and Roland Fountain; two sisters, Carolyn Worley and Norma (Leonard) Murphy; brother-in-law Dean Rohret; sister-in-law Diann Haugse; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Karen Rohret; and brother-in-law, James Worley.

Ralph’s family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Thomas Novak, the staff at Atrium Village in Hills and the staff at Briarwood Health Care Center in Iowa City for their kindness and attentive care that was provided to him during his stay.
