Marilyn Kay (Fjelstad) Jennewein, age 69, passed away unexpectedly in her sleep on Friday, May 20th, 2016. She was the older of two children born to O’Neal Fjelstad and Grace (Barr) Fjelstad. Marilyn was born March 28th, 1947 in Sioux Falls, SD. She grew up in Sioux Falls, graduating from Washington HS in 1965 and from Augustana College in 1969. She married John Jennewein in Sioux Falls on February 1st, 1969.

Marilyn taught English in White SD. She went on to teach in Orono, ME and Sioux City, IA. In Sioux City, she also taught at the community college, a job she thoroughly enjoyed. In 1984, Marilyn started working at the Law Library at the University of Iowa where she continued working until she retired in 2010.

She was very active in the Unitarian Universalist Society of Iowa City (UUSIC) where she worked on the history of the church, helped run a grief support group, sang in the choir, and was active on several committees.

Marilyn was incredibly gracious and compassionate. She took care of many people in many ways. She loved nature and was able to see the beauty and find joy in many places and with many people. Her friends were many and she maintained friendships over long distances throughout her life.

Marilyn liked crafts and was a skilled creative writer. She learned to weave baskets at the Senior Center. She also learned calligraphy early in her adult life, a skill she put to use in the UUSIC. She enjoyed reading novels and had several authors that were special favorites.

Marilyn is survived by her husband John Jennewein, her daughter Ami Jennewein Ross, her son-in-law Kevin Ross, her mother Grace Fjelstad, her brother Terry Fjelstad, her aunt Mel Hanson, her aunt and uncle Pat and Sam Bernstein, her uncle Bobby Barr, and many other relatives.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her father, O’Neal Fjelstad and her daughter, Kristine Ann Jennewein.

Marilyn is deeply loved and incredibly missed.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 PM on Friday, May 27th, 2016 at the Sanctuary Community Church, 2205 E. Grantview Dr., Coralville, IA 52241. The Reverend Steven Protzman, Unitarian Universalist Minister will lead the service.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family asks that donations be made to either the Unitarian Universalist Society of Iowa City or the Sierra Club in memory of Marilyn.
