Jean Ross Justice, 91, a resident at Oaknoll in Iowa City, died Thursday after a brief illness.

She was born in rural Stanly County, North Carolina in 1924, and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she met her future husband, the poet and long-time teacher at the Iowa Writers' Workshop, Donald Justice. They were married from 1947 until his death in 2004.

She was the youngest of four siblings, all of whom became published writers. She was widely published in numerous magazines, and was the author of two story collections, *The End of a Good Party and Other Stories* (2008) and *Family Feeling* (2014), and most recently, a novel set in the North Carolina of her youth, *Till My Baby Comes Home* (2016).

Burial will be private; a memorial service will be held at Oaknoll on Tuesday, April 12, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to her favorite charities, the ACLU, Amnesty International, and the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee.

She is survived by a son, Nathaniel Justice, and his wife, Elizabeth, of Black Mountain, North Carolina.
