Norma Jean Shultz, 87, passed away peacefully March 31, 2016 at Briarwood Health Care Center after a lengthy illness. A service to celebrate Norma’s life will be held at 10 am on Monday, April 4, 2016 at Lensing’s Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Road, Coralville. Visitation will be from 3-6 pm on Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Briarwood Health Care Center or to Essence of Life Hospice.

Norma was born December 24, 1928 to Walter and Hattie (Wood) Watson. She grew up in Fort Madison and graduated from Fort Madison High School. Norma married John L. Shultz in 1947. During her marriage she moved often with her family while her husband was finishing his PhD. They later divorced, and Norma moved to Iowa City in 1967, where she worked for the ICCSD as secretary to the principal of Lincoln school for 26 years. She remained very active in the lives of her children and grandchildren, seldom missing an athletic, academic, or extracurricular event, and frequently dropping off baked goods while everyone was at work or school. Her true joy in life was her family, was being a mother and a grandmother, and gathering everyone together for holiday meals that she laboriously prepared. These moments will be missed by everybody.

She is survived by her children and grandchildren: Jack and Jane Shultz; daughter-in-law Rita Shultz and children Todd (Sue), Amy (Steve), Jessica (Dave), and Michelle (Trent); Dave and Emily Shultz and children Chris, and Cory (Nino); Stef and Keith Swails and children Kelsea (Kyle), and Jake (Elizabeth); and her nephew Tim (Kim) Watson. She’s also survived by eleven great-grandchildren.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents, her brother and sister-in-law Daryl and Marianne Watson, and her son Gary.

The family would like to extend a deep thank you to the nurses and staff of Briarwood for their compassionate care.
