Helen Lucile Slaughter, 91, of Iowa City, formerly of Lone Tree and Riverside, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 20, 2016 at Atrium Village in Hills. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Iowa City with Father Steven Witt officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm on Monday, March 28 at Lensing Funeral Home in Iowa City. A Vigil Service will follow. Burial will be at the Lone Tree Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Iowa City Hospice.

Helen was born on June 26, 1924 in Riverside, IA, the daughter of Timothy and Mary (McKevitt) Colbert. She was raised in Riverside and graduated from St. Mary’s High School. On August 20, 1941, she married Raymond Slaughter in Riverside. For 22 years, Helen worked as an Account Clerk at The University of Iowa Business Office before retiring in 1987. Following her retirement, she worked many years at ACT.

Helen enjoyed attending the activities of her grandchildren, spending time with family and friends, playing bridge, and volunteering at Mercy Hospital.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and the Altar & Rosary.

Survivors include her six children: Gary of Lone Tree, Ronald (Kathy) of Amana, David (Jan) of Cedar Rapids, Keith (Diane) of Iowa City, Richard (Peggy) of Iowa City, and Brenda (Joe) Ewing of Iowa City; a son-in-law Dan Curtis of Hills; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren: one sister: Dorothy Watkinson of Riverside; a brother Robert Colbert of Riverside: a sister-in-law Shirley Slaughter of Iowa City.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter Judith Curtis, daughter-in-law Marla Slaughter, brothers Richard and Timothy Colbert, and sister Johanna Sleichter.
The family would like to offer their sincere appreciation to the staff and residents of Atrium Village and also to the staff of Iowa City Hospice for the compassionate care and friendship shown to Helen.
