Michael William McNamara, 66, passed away on Friday, February 26th at UIHC surrounded by family.

Mike was born December 4, 1949 in Iowa City, the son of Joseph Hubert and Marian Catherine (Kelly) McNamara. He was a 1969 graduate of Regina High School. Mike married Sandy Fry on May 15, 1977. They later divorced.

Mike was a musician and his first love was music. He drummed with several regional bands including The Red Knights while in high school, 20th Century Ltd., TCB, Profile, Mint Condition and Up Shot. Prior to living in Iowa City, Mike lived in Cedar Rapids for over 30 years. While living in Cedar Rapids he worked at Galt Sand/Addidas and McKesson Corp., and continued playing music on the weekends.

Mike enjoyed NASCAR, Sci-Fi, cross word puzzles and Sudoku. He always had a joke to tell and a smile on his face. He had a kind, gentle soul, and loved animals.

Survivors include his two daughters, Valerie (Justin) Wallace of Marion and Kyla McNamara of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren, Desiree McNamara, Luke McNamara, and Ainsley Wallace; siblings Dick (Margaret) McNamara of Bettendorf, Patricia McNamara of Mingo and Marcia McNamara of Iowa City and several nieces and nephews.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents and brother Laurence Edward.

No services are planned at this time.

Memorials may be directed to the Iowa City Shelter House in Mike’s name.
