William (Bill) Dean Jahnke went to heaven to be with his Savior on February 15, 2016.

A Memorial Service to Celebrate Bill’s Life will be held Thursday at 12:00 pm at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Iowa City. The family will greet friends at the church from 10:00 am until service time on Thursday. The family kindly requests that memorials be directed to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church or Iowa City Hospice.

Bill was born to William August Jahnke and Neva Lucille Steffa on January 25, 1925 in Luzerne, Iowa. He graduated from Van Horne Public Schools in June 1941, from the University of Iowa (BS 1946 and MS Physical Therapy 1949). He served in World War II with the US Army from 1944-46.

While at the University of Iowa, he met and courted his wife of sixty seven years, Helen Marie (Diton). They married in January of 1949.

The Lord blessed them with six children: David Dean (Virginia) Jahnke of O’Fallon, MO, Barbara Ann (Steve) Campbell of Downey, IA, William Dean Jr. (Jane) Jahnke of Waukee, IA, Paul Jahnke of Cedar Rapids, IA, Elizabeth Ann (Dan) Colwell of Bellevue, NE, and James Alan (Anne) Jahnke of Cedar Rapids, IA. He has twelve grandchildren, David Jahnke, Jr., Chris Jahnke, Megan (Jahnke) Bailey, Chad Campbell, Lisa (Campbell) Kirkpatrick, Aaron Jahnke, Alyson (Jahnke) Beecher, Andrew Jahnke, Rachel Colwell, Matthew Colwell, Samuel Jahnke and Sarah Jahnke. In addition he has twelve great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Helen, all of his children, his sister Jean Thorson and a step brother Robert Jahnke. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Charles.

Bill and Helen were charter members of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church where they regularly worshipped. Throughout the years Bill was active as Secretary, Elder, Usher, and regularly participated in projects to improve the church’s properties. He lived his Christian faith, and his role model was effective as all of his family continue in their Christian faith lives. Bill started his Physical Therapy career at Children’s Hospital at the U of I, and later was the Head of Physical Therapy at the Iowa City VA hospital. He was widely known and respected in his Physical Therapy profession. He was the Treasurer of the Federal Employees Credit Union for many years. Outside of raising his family, his interests were in gardening and various crafts. His quiet, humble and friendly personality will be missed by all.
