John A. Kleinschmidt, 91, of Iowa City, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 03, 2016 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 am on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City with Father Jeff Belger officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 pm on Friday at Lensing Funeral Home, Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

John was born on September 1, 1924 in Johnson County, IA, the son of John W. and Addie (Reynolds) Kleinschmidt. As a child he attended Sharon Elementary School #3, which was also known as Hartsock School. On April 12, 1946, he was called to the local courthouse draft board, but didn’t leave for Ft. Snelling in St. Paul, MN until April 22, 1946 to go into the service. He went to the 240th Engineering Construction Division and attended mechanics school in the Philippines for 8 weeks. John graduated 5th in the class of 180 men. During free time in the service, he enjoyed playing baseball, sightseeing and taking pictures while in Japan. John was in the service for two years until April 1948.

On October 16, 1950 he was united in marriage to Vivian Metz at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Riverside, IA. They celebrated their 65th anniversary on October 16, 2015.

John worked as a mechanic at Eldon Miller Trucking for 13 years, Kennedy Auto Market for 14 years and Pyramid Services for 23 years, until retiring in 1996.

John’s inquisitive intelligence gave him the ability to figure out how things worked, which enabled him to fix almost anything. He also enjoyed gardening, reading, fixing things and carpentry work.
Survivors include his wife Vivian Kleinschmidt, four children: twins Jane Jardine (Henry) and James Kleinschmidt (Charlotte), John F. Kleinschmidt (Sheila), and Jeff Kleinschmidt; a sister Leona Buchmayer, six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Joe, Roy and Emery, and sisters Marguerite and Bessie.
