John A. Northup, 60, of Iowa City, died Friday, January 29, 2016 at Iowa City Rehabilitation & Health Care Center.

Graveside services will be held Friday at 11:00 am at Grove Township Cemetery near Lenox, Iowa. Fr. Ken Halbur will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or an American Legion of your choice.

John was born February 4, 1955 in Corning, Iowa, the son of Byron & Anita (Long) Northup. John grew up on the family farm near Lenox and graduated from Lenox High School. As an adult, however, he liked to joke that he had actually attended a one-room country schoolhouse.

John attended Iowa Western Community College in Clarinda and later received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa and his master’s degree from Mankato University. In 1991, he received his doctorate in school psychology from the University of Iowa.

Survivors include his siblings, Linda Pershin (Mike) of West Branch, Iowa, Celia Curry of Johnston, Iowa, Lisa Wilkinson (Greg) of Prescott, Iowa and Mary Louise Sandstrom (Albert) of Dallas Center, Iowa; nieces & nephews, Valerie Sechser (John), Loren Sandstrom (Theresa), Michelle Poulson, Pamela Strabala (Brent), David Curry (Janelle), Jocelyn Blazek and Robyn Blazek; and a sister in law, Theresa Orecchia (Michael) of Wilmington, Delaware.

John was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Edwin.
