Carolyn “Darlene” Goodfriend, 91, of Iowa City passed away three days after her 70th wedding anniversary on January 22, 2016 with her two daughters at her bedside. She was born in Bennington, KS to Herbert Delano Essig and Grace Emily Markley Essig on December 31, 1924. She was preceded in death by her husband Joe Goodfriend, Jr.

Darlene is survived by daughters Emily Schiefer (Bill) of Iowa City, IA and Caryn Patton (Jack) of Montgomery, TX. She has three grandsons Jonathan Schiefer, Luke Schiefer, and Michael Patton (Tomoko). Loving great-grandchildren are Benjamin, Alec, and Cate Schiefer and Mitchel Patton.

Graveside services will be held at 10:30 am on Thursday, January 28, 2016 in Bennington, KS, her birthplace and wedding venue.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Bennington Cemetery to perpetuate the Memorial Day recognition of all veterans and may be directed to the Bennington Cemetery, P.O. Box 245, Bennington, KS 67422.
