Lowell "Mike" Coburn, 72, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 17, 2016, surrounded by his family, after a brief hospital stay. He is survived by his daughter Julia (Karin Olson), son Tom (Carrie), step-daughter Holli (Chad), five grandchildren: Jacob, Megan, Katie, Samantha and Zachary; brother Keith (Marilyn), and sister Ruth (Tom).

A Celebration of Life reception will be held Saturday, January 23rd from 10 AM to 2 PM at The Kirkwood Room (located next to Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City).

Mike was born in New Sharon, IA on August 25, 1943 but lived almost his entire life in Iowa City. His older sister Ruth adored him and was like a little mama to him. They were very close being only 2 years apart. Ruth walked Mike to school every day--he hated school to the point of being sick on the walk there! They loved playing cards and Mike continued this pastime throughout his life. His love of fishing started as a boy with family fishing trips to Canada.

While working at Hy-Vee as a produce clerk and carry out, he met Merle Ann, who worked in the bakery. They married in 1963. He was a good provider for his family and always put his kids first. In the early 90's Mike started dating Sharon and even though they did not marry, her daughter Holli became like a daughter to Mike. Holli's children with Chad became Mike's pride and joy - he was born to be a grandpa!

Mike loved to do things for his kids and one thing he enjoyed doing with all of them was to travel. From summer vacation drives to visit Ruth and family in CA, Texas and Louisiana, to taking Tom and Julie to the Bahamas, to planning trips to Las Vegas with Sharon (and Holli and Chad), to flying to Oregon with his grandson Jacob...Mike didn't like to fly but he did like to travel! He also loved to visit the riverboat casinos and often times took his mother so she could play the penny slots!

His career included being a pinsetter for the local bowling alley (and he was in bowling leagues for many years), grocery work, and he started working as a press operator for Moore Business Forms in 1963. He was there until he retired in 1998 in the purchasing dept. Mike was counting the days to retirement for years!

If you ask his friends and family how they would describe him, you would hear that he was warm, a good listener, generous, straight forward, fun to be around and respected. Put simply, Mike was a great guy!
