Irene Johns, 100, formerly of East Chicago, Highland & Portage, Indiana, died Sunday morning, January 17, 2016 at Lantern Park Nursing & Rehab Center in Coralville, Iowa.

Services will begin Saturday at 10:00 am at Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home in Portage. Friends may call after 9:00 am Saturday at the funeral home.

Burial will follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Schererville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or a Hospice organization of your choice, in Irene’s memory. Arrangements are with Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City and Edmonds & Evans Funeral Homes in Portage.

Born May 18, 1915 in Berwick, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Joseph & Julia (Kormendi) Cher, Irene was raised in Hammond, Indiana. She married Stephen Johns on June 22, 1935 in Hammond, Indiana. Irene kept the family home and raised her two sons. She later worked at K-Mart in Highland, Indiana.

Irene was a member of First United Methodist Church in Portage. She loved creating art, whether it be sketching, drawing or painting. She moved to the Coralville area in 2007 to be near her family.

Survivors include a son Richard (Nancy) of Coralville, Iowa, a daughter in law, Susan Johns of Dyer, Indiana; grandchildren, Lisa (Mitch) Overton, Marcia (Randy) Evans, Jennifer (Ethan) Franklin and Jason Johns; great-grandchildren, Sarah Overton, Jacob Evans, Sophia Farias and Emma Franklin; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Irene in death were her husband Stephen, son, Ronald Johns, brother, Steve Cher, sister, Vera Cher and half-sisters, Virginia Matusiak & Helen Ahlborn.
