Asher Kent Braverman, 81, passed away January 2,, 2016, at the Briarwood Healthcare Center in Iowa City. Born March 7, 1934, he was a native of Iowa City, graduating from City High in 1952 then receiving a degree in Broadcasting from the University of Iowa. Kent served his country in Korea with the Armed Forces Radio Network as a radio personality and newsman. Following his service, Kent was employed at several radio and TV stations as on-air talent in the St. Louis, Cedar Rapids and Davenport markets (primarily St. Louis). Returning to Iowa City, he began developing and acquiring rental properties, farmland and taking care of his elderly parents.

Kent pursued approval from the Federal Government for the creation of a new radio station for the Iowa City area. After numerous years and many challenges, KCJJ signed on the air in the mid 1970’s, focused on local news and high school sports, and of course the Iowa Hawkeyes. That noble tradition continues to this day with KCJJ’s current owners.

Kent had a passion for Radio\TV and theater, performing in many local community productions in his day. He became friends with Writer/Director/Producer Gary Marshall during his days with the Armed Forces Radio Network in Korea. In the 1990’s Kent spent the winters in Los Angeles, and had small roles in Gary’s films The Other Sister, Exit to Eden and Dear God. He was a proud member of SAG (Screen Actors Guild), and also found success on screen with several national TV commercials during this time. At the local level, he was a strong supporter of the arts, schools, charities and community projects.

Kent first and foremost cherished his family and many friends and felt blessed to be part of the extended Braverman Family. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Aaron and Faye Braverman, and an infant son. He is survived by his sons, Cordell (Iowa City), Joshua (New York City) and Jeremy (Budapest, Hungary), grandchildren Alexandra and Andrew, sister Goldene Braverman-Haendel (Richard) (Iowa City), and his nieces Melissa and Erica (and children Madison and Sam).

A funeral service will begin Monday at 11:00 am at Agudas Achim Congregation in Iowa City with burial to follow at Agudas Achim Cemetery. A meal of condolence will follow the burial service. In keeping with Jewish tradition, please observe not sending flowers, instead memorial considerations may directed to Riverside Theatre, 213 N. Gilbert Street, Iowa City, Iowa 52245.
