Robert “Bob” John Sueppel passed away suddenly at home while celebrating Christmas Eve with family members.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM Wednesday, December 30th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 8 PM at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, where a rosary will be recited at 3:30 PM and a Vigil Service will be held at 7:30PM. Memorials may be directed to St. Mary’s Church or St. Patrick’s Church.
Bob was born December 12, 1934 in Iowa City, the son of Francis and Katherine Striegel Sueppel.
Bob attended and graduated from St. Mary’s in Iowa City. While attending St. Mary’s, “Bobbie” Sueppel was known for his way around the basketball court. After high school, Bob went on to St. Ambrose College where he continued to play basketball and later joined the United States Army.
While stationed in San Antonio, Texas, Bob met Mercy Guiterrez and they were united in marriage on August 31, 1957 in Iowa City. Upon returning to Iowa City, Bob was employed for many years at Moore Business Forms. After retiring from Moore, he became very involved in the family restaurant La Casa.
He was a long time member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and attended mass every day. In his younger years, Bob loved to play softball and bowled on a La Casa team. He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren compete in various sporting events, attending Hawkeye football games and watching the fighting Irish. Bob and Mercy enjoyed spending time with their family and friends up north at their cabin.
Bob is survived by his wife, Mercy; daughters Sandy Moreland (John) and Laurie Lansdon (Rich) and son Bart Sueppel (Vicki); grandchildren; Tom Moreland (Katrina), Melissa Moreland, Jeff Moreland (Melissa) and Nicholas Sueppel; great grandchildren Mercedes Moreland, Carolyn Moreland, Tom Moreland, Giselle Dulorme and John Moreland III; siblings, William (Pat) Sueppel,Marilyn Simpson, Pauline McAreavy, Alice Finnegan, Francis “Bud” (Carol) Sueppel, Paul (Carolyn) Sueppel and Ann Madsen; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gertrude (Jose), Jim (Vera), Aurora (Carl), Joe (Isabelle), George (Gloria) and Baltimore; numerous, nieces, nephews and extended family.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his sons, Bret and Francis Robert,brothers and sisters-in-law, Jerry Simpson, Sonny Madsen, Tom Finnegan, Judy Sueppel and Tom McAreavy, and other special family members.
