Junior W. Courtney, 91, of Iowa City, died Sunday, December 6, 2015.

Funeral services will be held at 1pm Thursday, December 10, 2015, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service, with burial to follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be after 11am until services on Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Junior’s memory. Junior was born July 3, 1924, in Houston, MO, the son of William and Della (Morton) Courtney. Following high school he enlisted in the United States Army, serving in the 101st. Airborne Division, having been in combat at the Battle of the Bulge, where he received the Purple Heart.

He married Elizabeth M. Barnhart on April 29, 1944 in Moberly, MO. For many years he worked for the former Iowa – Illinois Gas and Electric which later became MidAmerican Energy. Junior enjoyed his life, spending time in the outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping, and mushrooming, his family and friends.

His family includes his wife, Elizabeth; their children, William E Courtney (Sylvia), Stephen Courtney (Donna), and Rodney Courtney (Debbie); 6 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and Junior’s brother, Perry Courtney.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and 2 sisters, Irene and Christine.
