Jeanette L. Bauer, 81, passed away in Iowa City on October 15, 2015.
A brief ceremony followed by a Celebration of Life for Jeanette will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 PM on Saturday, November 28, 2015, The Kirkwood Room in Iowa City (next to Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service). In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Bauer-Erickson Scholarship Fund through the University of Nebraska Foundation at https://nufoundation.org/donate?fundId=01048970.
Jeanette was born on July 25, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois, to Erick Klaus and Hildur Kristina (Arnquist) Erickson. She received a full scholarship to Northwestern University where she earned her Bachelor’s degree and met her husband of 57 years, Otto F. Bauer. Jeanette later received an M.A. in art history from Bowling Green State University.
Jeanette began her teaching career in the public schools of Bainbridge, Georgia and Waco, Texas in the 1950s, and later taught private school in Kenosha, Wisconsin. She was also a leader in the Faculty Women’s Clubs at BGSU, University of Wisconsin-Parkside, and the University of Nebraska-Omaha, and on the boards of the Joslyn Art Museum and Omaha Ballet. In retirement, she was a docent at the University of Iowa Museum of Art and a member of the Iowa City Spinners and Weavers Guild.
Jeanette was an artist with a passion for colors, and an active member of weavers guilds and art galleries in Omaha and Iowa City. Her talents as a cook were admired by everyone privileged to enjoy tunnbrod and other Swedish dishes at her table. She was perhaps happiest at the family summer cottage in Michigan, picking wild berries, fishing, bird watching, and weaving by the lake.
Jeanette is preceded in death by her husband, Otto. Jeanette is survived by two sons, Steven Mark (Denise) of Belvedere, CA, and Eric Paul (Karin) of Iowa City, and four grandchildren, Katherine, Natalie, Kristina, and Allyson.
