V.Norleen Babcock

V.Norleen Babcock, 86, of Iowa City, died at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics on October 27, 2015 from complications of a hemorrhagic stroke.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday at 10:00 am at Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City.
Fr. Lou Leonhardt will officiate. Burial will be in The Mt. Ararat Cemetery near Centerville, Iowa. Memorial donations may be directed to St. Wenceslaus Church.

Norleen was born in Centerville, Iowa, the daughter of Lambert “Doner” & Alice (McMahon) Sanders.

Growing up in the country near Udell, Iowa, Norleen graduated from Moravia High School. After high school, she taught at a one room schoolhouse for a couple of years to earn enough money to attend nursing school. She attended St. Joseph’s School of Nursing where she received her Diploma in Nursing (the school then became Ottumwa Heights College and later transitioned into Indian Hills Community College) in Ottumwa, Iowa.

She worked as a registered nurse at Mercy Hospital and the VA Hospital – both in Iowa City. Norleen moved back to Centerville, Iowa in 1965 and worked at St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital, ending her career there as the night supervisor. In 1983, she moved back to Iowa City and worked at Iowa City Care Center as a supervisor (now Iowa City Rehabilitation and Health Care Center). Norleen married Verne Babcock in Iowa City on June 8, 1957.

After her retirement, Norleen would still go to visit some of her favorite patients at the Iowa City Care Center. She also cared for her parents until their passing.

Norleen enjoyed spending time with her family. She enjoyed reading. She liked flowers and plants – planting many around her home. Norleen liked to take long walks and enjoy nature. She liked to share her interest in plants and trees with her grandchildren.

She cared about animals – whether it be a lost pet or wildlife. She would make sure that they were fed and the family never knew what animal would appear at her doorstep.

Survivors include her children; Karen Robertson (Doug) of Iowa City, Anne Schneider (Jim) of Tipton and John Babcock of Iowa City; a brother, Donald Sanders of Carmichael, California; four grandchildren, Jared Babcock (Marcia Knepp), Andrew Robertson (Amanda), Tyler Robertson (Bailea Prosser) and Nicole Babcock and 1 great-grandson, Michael Robertson.

Her husband and parents died before her.
