J.W. “Bill” “Doc” Carberry, DVM, 82, of Iowa City, passed away due to complications from diabetes on Friday, October 9, 2015.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with luncheon to follow. Visitation will be Wednesday, Oct. 14 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, 605 Kirkwood Ave., Iowa City where a Vigil Service will be held at 6:30p.m. Burial will be 11:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 16 in Moorland, IA.

Doc married Coleen (Wagner) Carberry on November 24, 1956 and was blessed with 58 years of marriage. His greatest legacy is his 9 children and 13 grandchildren.

Doc was born December 28, 1932, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and was the youngest of three sons of Emmett and Pauline (Hruska) Carberry. Doc graduated from Corpus Christi Academy in Fort Dodge in 1950. He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1957 from Iowa State University. Doc maintained a large animal veterinary practice for over 25 years, the last 15 of which he practiced in Newhall, Iowa. Doc sold his practice to transform his avocation into his vocation and purchased A&A Coins in Iowa City. He expanded the business to include many collectables and antiques. Doc loved anything that was old and neat (tokens, medals, political, advertising, and post cards). He was a member of the America Veterinary Association and the Iowa State Veterinary Association as well as many national collector organizations.

Doc was an avid sports fan. He was a rare breed – he cheered for his Cyclones and his Hawkeyes, however, his true passion was the Cubs. He’s still waiting for next year – but who knows, this may be the year! GO CUBS GO!

Doc and Coleen are members of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Iowa City. The family would like to thank the compassionate staff at UIHC 6 Roy Carver East, Windmill Manor, and Hospice Compassus. Their patience and kindness will not be forgotten.

Doc was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife Coleen, two brothers; Brother Robert Carberry, CSC (South Bend, IN) and Joseph (Tim Turner) Carberry, M.D. (Los Angeles, CA) and his children; Susan (Gary) Drtina (Woodbury, MN), Bill (Mimi Haithcox) Carberry (Moncure, NC), Beth (Lyndon) Peterson (Urbandale, IA), Michael Carberry (Iowa City, IA), Patrick Carberry (Pasadena, CA), Paul (Mindy Turici) Carberry (Pittsburgh, PA), Anne (Jeff) Wilson (Bettendorf, IA), Matthew Carberry (Denver, CO) and Bridget (Tony) Montgomery (Urbandale, IA). Grandchildren include Megan Carberry, Cameron (Amanda) Peterson, Samantha (Cody) McClelland, Allison (Andrew) Swanson, Tom Drtina, Caleb and Gracie Wilson, PJ Carberry, Alex and Elias Kontos and Stella, Violet, and Scarlett Montgomery.

Memorial donations may be directed to the James William Carberry Memorial Fund.
