Duane was born in Stuart, Iowa on December 27, 1935 to Robert and Lelah (Douglas) Allison. Duane grew up in Winterset and graduated from Winterset High School in 1953. He enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17 and served from 1953 to 1956. While serving in the Navy, he was assigned to the destroyer escort ship USS Douglas A. Munro where he was the only Teleman. Upon honorable discharge from the Navy, he became engaged to and then married the love of his life, Fern Schoenenberger on May 5, 1957 at the Winterset Methodist Church. The newlyweds moved to Iowa City where Duane attended the University of Iowa and never left.

After graduating from the University in 1961 with a BBA in accounting, Duane joined the administration at the University of Iowa where for the next 36 years he held several positions in the business office before retiring in 1997 as the Assistant Treasurer. During his tenure in the Treasurer’s office, Duane was a national leader in treasury management. He held multiple board positions including National President of the Treasury Management Association (now called Association for Financial Professionals). He was also instrumental in creating the Big Ten Treasurers Management Group, and served as its first President.

Duane loved Iowa City and the Hawkeyes. He was a 58 year season ticket holder in both football and basketball and attended numerous other Hawkeye sporting events. When Duane was not watching the Hawkeyes, he was serving on boards at First United Methodist Church, Sunrise Optimist Club and numerous other civic organizations. Duane was also a longtime member of the Elks Club and a partner in Gasby’s Convenience Stores and Washington Street Properties.

Duane loved the outdoors. He was happiest cutting wood, hunting mushrooms or simply hiking in the woods. He shared his enthusiasm for the outdoors with all his friends. Many of Duane’s friends joined him Mondays and Wednesdays for golf and Tuesday and Friday mornings for coffee.

Duane is survived by Fern, his loving wife of 58 years, brother Bernard Allison of Kellogg, IA, many nieces and nephews including: Maria and Paul Benetti of Mt. Vernon, WA, Karina and Jay Casini of Des Moines, Monica and Dan Frankl of Urbandale and Lavina and Ron Cerny of Iowa City.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Kenneth and Keith.

The family would like to thank Dr. Feeley and the nurses at Mercy Cancer Center. A special thanks to Natalie and Julie at Mercy Hospice who provided exceptional care and compassion for Duane.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Duane Allison Memorial Fund at Hills Bank and Trust care of Fern Allison.
