Betty R. McNamer, 88, of Iowa City, died at her home unexpectedly, on September 21, 2015.

Visitation will be Wednesday, September 30th, from 5:00 - 8:00 pm, at Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City. Burial will be at 1:00 pm on Thursday at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City. Memorials may be directed to The Betty R. McNamer Memorial Fund.

Betty Rose McNamer was born July 3rd, 1927 in Morse, Iowa to Andrew and Blanche McNamer. She lived and worked with her parents and brother on the family farm where she had been born.

When the Depression was ended and World War II began the family moved to Iowa City to find work. Andrew became a heavy equipment operator and Betty went from a one room schoolhouse to the new City High School. She was a member of the Pep Squad and Women's Reserve and graduated in 1945. Her yearbook included a memoriam to the 36 City High graduates killed in the war that year.

After graduation and with the end of the war Betty went to the Iowa Commerce College to study secretarial work. Upon graduation she went to work at the University of Iowa Hospitals as a medical secretary for the next six years. Then she moved over to the Veteran's Administration Hospital. There she worked her way up to becoming the secretary to the Chief of Surgery and she remained at that post through the next five surgical chiefs.

After over thirty years at the VA Betty retired to care for her parents in their old age, but continued to work part time.

Betty traveled with the Iowa Mountaineers in her younger days. She was an avid bowler and an unmatched seamstress; making many of her own clothes.

But her true passion was her family, her parents, her brother, and in absence of her own children, her nieces and nephews. She doted on them and became an extra mother when needed. She offered unwavering support in many ways. From babysitting them when they were children to typing papers for their college classes. Aunt Betty was always ready to offer a helping hand and a wise and kind word.

Survivors include her nieces and nephews Julia Anderson, Matt (Ellen) McNamer, John (Susan) McNamer, Kathryn McNamer and their children.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Howard and sister in-law Patricia.
