Martha L. (Downing) Wakefield, 97, of Iowa City, passed away Saturday, September 5, 2015 at Oaknoll Retirement Community, Iowa City.

Burial will be in Rockingham Meeting House Cemetery, Bellows Falls, VT.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Oaknoll Foundation or Iowa City Hospice in honor of the Oaknoll Health Center staff for the loving care she received for over three years as well as excellent end of life care.

Martha was born on May 12, 1918 in Bellows Falls, VT the daughter of Morton F. and Rita (Cox) Downing. She graduated from Bellows Falls High School, VT. Martha attended Traphagen School of Design in NYC and was an excellent clothing designer and seamstress. She lived in New York and Massachusetts during her son Lee’s school years, and then moved to Colorado and North Carolina. She moved to Iowa City in 2012. Martha was united in marriage to James M. Wakefield and they spent 73 wonderful years together before he passed away in 2011. They loved to travel and camped extensively through the U.S., driving twice to Alaska.

Martha is survived by her son Lee (Susan) Wakefield of Coralville, IA; grandson Thomas L. Wakefield of Indiana; great-grandson Andrew J. Wakefield of Indiana; one niece in Maine, and one nephew in Tennessee.

Martha is preceded in death by her parents, husband James, and two brothers Morton Jr. and Clarence Downing.
