Dorothea Ann (Schlotfelt) Kultala, 89, passed away on August 29, 2015 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, IA. Services will be held at 10am on Saturday, October 3 at the First Presbyterian Church in Estherville, IA. Her remains will be interred at the National Cemetery in Keokuk, IA on her 90th birthday July 2016.

Dorothea was born July 14, 1926, in La Porte City, IA, the daughter of Pearl and John Schlotfelt. She graduated from Vinton High in 1944. Following high school she taught in a rural one-room school for several years. In 1947 she worked for United Airlines in Chicago where she met the love of her life, Edwin Kultala.

Dorothea and Edwin were married at her parents’ farm near Clutier, IA on April 23, 1948. They were married for 57 years until Ed’s death in 2005. They lived primarily in Estherville, IA until moving to Keokuk, IA in 2000. Dorothea most recently lived in Iowa City, IA.

Surviving her are her 6 children and their spouses: Steve and his wife Laura of Broomfield, CO; John and his wife DeAnn of Kansas City, MO; Sandra and her husband, Don of Ventura, CA; Deborah and her husband Steve of Iowa City, IA; Kathy and her husband Craig of Manson, IA; Dan and his wife Kelly of Kansas City, KS along with Dorothea’s 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Joan Campbell and her brothers Jim Schlotfelt and Don Schlotfelt. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by parents, four brothers, two sisters and one grandchild.

Dorothea will continue to live in her family’s hearts remembering her infectious laugh, the annual birthday cards, her family-favorite fresh baked cinnamon rolls, her unwavering love and witty sense of humor. Her love for the Lord and her unconditional love for her family and friends will live on forever.
