Edith Mae Kopping (Summerhill), 89, of West Branch, died peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, August 27, 2015 at Crestview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, West Branch, Iowa. A Celebration of Edith’s life will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Burlington, Iowa, with Pastor Kathleen Wohlers officiating. A luncheon will follow the service prior to burial. Burial will be in Keokuk National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Iowa City Hospice.

Edith was born on October 5, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois to Robert and Avaline (Roberts) Summerhill. She first spotted her future husband Melvin in a military parade when she was 16 years old and later, a friend set them up on a date. Edith and Melvin married on January 19, 1946; he preceded her in death on August 31, 2002.

They had three children, and moved from Chicago to Burlington, Iowa in 1964. Edith was a homemaker skilled in cooking, needlework, and crafting. She was also an active member of several groups at Bethany Lutheran Church. Edith loved spending time with her friends, traveling, and shopping. Her loved ones remember her especially for her devotion to her family and her sense of humor.

Edith is survived by her three children, Jane Kopping of Des Plaines, IL, Jim (Kathy) Kopping, of Burlington, IA, and Linda Kopping of West Branch, IA; three grandchildren, Elizabeth, Daniel, and Nora Kopping; her great-granddaughter, Leila White; brother Clifford (Lillian) Summerhill of Battle Creek, MI; and sister Carole (Larry) Arndt of Vacaville, CA.
She was preceded in death by her husband Mel, two brothers Robert and Ralph Summerhill, and sister Dorothy Goers.
