Gerald L. “Jerry” Schump, 60 lifetime resident of Iowa City died Wednesday, August 26, 2015, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Wednesday, September 2, 2015, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service with burial to follow at the Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Jerry’s memory.

Gerald L. Schump was born February 19, 1955, in Iowa City the son of Roland “Bud” and Phyllis (Connell) Schump. He attended schools in Iowa City graduating from City High School in 1973. In 1979 Jerry married Thalia Newkirk, and to this union their son, Michael was born. Jerry and Thalia later divorced. For over 40 years Jerry worked for Moore Business Forms, now R.R. Donnelly. Being a car buff, he enjoyed restoring older models back to new life. But more than this, he loved being at his son’s side as crew chief as Mike competed around the Midwest for a number of years racing. Wasn’t much better in life than this for the both of them!

His family includes his son, Mike and his wife, Christina; Jerry’s mother, Phyllis; and some cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Bud; grandparents, aunts and uncles.
