Mildred Bidlack, 88, of Coralville passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 4, 2015 at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 9th at the Coralville United Methodist Church with Pastor Doug Williams officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. A private family burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

Mildred was born November 17, 1926, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Raymond S. Grossman of Marshalltown, Iowa. She graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1944 and received both her B.A. and M.A. in Education from the University of Iowa.

Mrs. Bidlack taught two years in the Mid-Prairie Community School District and 36 years for the Iowa City Community School District -- 25 years at Longfellow Elementary School and 11 years at Horn Elementary School, retiring in 1997. She was a lifetime member of the National Education Association and had served on the Iowa City Education Association as Secretary and Executive Board Member.

Mrs. Bidlack was a charter member of the Coralville United Methodist Church since 1958 and former member of Pilgrim Chapter of Daughter of the American Revolution (DAR) and Delta Kappa Gamma Society for women educators. She served on the executive boards of the Johnson County Historical Society and the Friends of the Coralville Public Library.

In 1984, Mrs. Bidlack was named History Teacher of the Year by the Iowa Society of Daughters of the American Revolution. In 1986, she was chosen as one of thirty United States teachers to attend the American Revolutionary War Seminar in Virginia. In 1987, the Iowa Council of Social Studies honored her as Iowa’s Social Studies Teacher of the Year. In 1989, she was given the Governor’s Volunteer Award for her participation in the Blue Ribbon Task Force for the teaching of Iowa History. In 1995, Mrs. Bidlack was one of thirty-five Iowa teachers chosen to author Prairie Voices, the Iowa Sesquicentennial text and activities provided to all fifth grades in Iowa. In 1998, she received a second Governor’s Volunteer Award for participation in the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). She was a volunteer a Coralville Central, Kirkwood, Weber, and Horn Elementary Schools for “Rock and Read” and “Speak Up” programs and was honored in 2012 for 15 years of service with 1,823 hours in RSVP.

She is survived by four daughters: Jan Becking of Fairfield, Ohio, Barbara Grossman of Iowa City, Iowa, Deborra (Jerry) Miller of Fairfield, Ohio, and Christine (David) Adams of West Chester, Pennsylvania; four grandchildren: Kerry (David) Walker of Highland, Utah, Cameron (Lauren) Adams of Romansville, Pennsylvania, Melanie Adams of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Natalie Barker of Beaufort, North Carolina; great-grandchildren: Madison and Bailey Walker, and Bryana and Kylie Adams; and sister, Mrs. Jean Brennecke of Marshalltown, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Marg Reading; and brother, Richard Grossman.

Mildred (Mimi) was a wonderful mother and she cherished her beloved cats. She was a dedicated teacher and volunteer who touched the lives of many students. She also loved reading, history, and travel.
