Gale Lee Thirtyacre, 89, of North Liberty, died Thursday, May 28, 2015 at Mercy Hospital.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be Ridgewood Cemetery in North Liberty with Military Honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed the North Liberty American Legion -- Post 1976.

Gale was born February 23, 1926 in Wapello, Iowa, the son of Clifford and Julia (Ament) Thirtyacre. He served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946 in the South Pacific. On August 21, 1946, Gale married Creta Carter in Hampton, Iowa. Gale moved to the North Liberty area in 1954. He was a maintenance worker for the Department of Transportation for twenty-seven years, retiring in 1988. Gale was a farmer in the North Liberty area for twenty years.

He was a member of the North Liberty First United Methodist Church and the American Legion -- Post 1976. Gale bred and raised quarter horses and enjoyed getting young people interested in horse related activities. He loved to raccoon hunt with his mule “Dan” and play cards with his friends.

Gale is survived by his loving wife, Creta, and their three sons, Darwin (Sharon) Thirtyacre of Iowa City, Wendell Thirtyacre of Washington, and Marvin Thirtyacre of North Liberty; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Gale was preceded in death by one son, G. Dwayne Thirtyacre; his parents; and nine siblings: Elmer, John, Clarence, Chester, Dale, Carl, Ida Adams, Lela Noble and Ola Johnson.
