Reedley ExponentRoy L. “RL” Peterson, 64, of Coralville and formerly of Danville, VA, died Thursday, October 3, 2013, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Cedar County, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held 6 p.m., Wednesday, October 9, 2013, at the Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation service in Iowa City, Iowa, with a time of visitation prior to the service beginning at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Roy Peterson Memorial Fund. Roy Lonzo Peterson was born October 6, 1948, in Reedley, CA; son of Irvin and Opal (Cabe) Peterson. After high school he served in the US Marine Corps in Viet Nam where he earned a Purple Heart. After the Corps, he became a carpenter for a number of years in Virginia and recently in Iowa. He was a member of the North Main Baptist Church in Danville, VA and the Iowa City Local 1260 Carpenters Union; an avid supporter of Mark Martin, the 49ers, and the Marine Corps. Roy loved riding motorcycles and horses, and was good with both, but most important to Roy was his family; especially his grandchildren who he absolutely adored!
His family includes his wife, Kelly Cain Peterson of Dry Fork, VA; sons, Shawn Peterson (Terry) of Callands, VA, Royce Peterson (Lori) and Isaac Peterson (Tiffany Walker) both of Coralville; grandchildren, Levi, Shandie, Amber, Sheila, Royce, Trevor, Kameron, Jaxon and Brycen; great-granddaughter, Aiyanna; siblings, Linda Warren, David Boatright and Caroline Gibson and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents.
