Ruth Isabelle (Mason) Wenzl, whose soul departed February 17, 2004, was born November 11, 1906 in Penn Township near Iowa City to Chiles William Mason and Bertha J. Mason. Ruth's first husband, James J. Denneny preceded her in death January 2, 1963 after 23 years of marriage. Also preceding Ruth in death were her second husband, Leo Leonard Wenzl on August 5, 1983 after 10 years of marriage, her sisters Marjorie J. and Sarah Mason and brothers Chiles W. and Carmen L. Mason.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 27 at 11:00 a.m. at Lensing Funeral Service, friends may call on Friday from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at Lensing’s. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Memorials may be made in her name.
Ruth graduated from Iowa City High School (1921-1925). She attended Iowa City Junior College and Iowa City Normal School and graduated from Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls, IA. in 1927. Ruth taught grade school in Johnson County Schools until 1942 when she and her husband moved to Portland, Oregon to be part of the war effort of World War II. She worked at Kaiser Steel shipyard in payroll time keeping. After the World War II victory she worked for the state of Oregon and attended night classes at Portland State College. She received her Bachelor of Science in Education in 1955 and then taught grade school in Portland until retiring in 1973. She lived the rest of her days in Oregon which she loved just a little bit more than Iowa.
She loved her school children, traveling the U.S. and abroad, sewing, canning, fishing, fresh vegetables, hunting mushrooms, and anyone who would give her a smile. She was a patient, loving lady.
Ruth is survived by her step-children: Delbert Wenzl of Minneapolis, Joseph Wenzl of Omaha, Leona Doidge of Santa Maria, CA, and LeRoy Wenzl and wife Linda of Glendale, AZ; step grandson Steve Ruzicka and wife Carolyn of Burns, Oregon; a nephew Chiles William Mason of Iowa City, nieces Juanita Mason of Riverside, Carolyn Louvar and husband Robert of Solon, Mary E. Clark and husband Steve of Solon, and Marsha Donohue and husband James of St. Marys, IA.
