Gilbert D. ‘Gill’ Wells, age 97, of Iowa City died on Thursday, January 15, 2004 at his home in Iowa City. Funeral services will be on Saturday, January 17, 2004 at the Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home in Iowa City on Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a Masonic Service at 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be given to Hospice of Iowa City, online condolences may be sent to his family at www.gayandciha.com.

Gilbert Daniel Wells was born on September 16, 1906 in Sanborn, Iowa the son of Frank and Roselda (Hoffa) Wells. He attended Sanborn Schools and served in the Army. Gill married Rosa Nissen on December 15, 1928 in Sibley, Iowa. He farmed in northwest Iowa until moving to Iowa City around 1935. For many years he worked as a cook at Veterans Hospital and later at Courier Hall in Iowa City. Gill also worked in maintenance at the Montgomery Ward Store in Iowa City and at Lakeside Apartments until he retired in 1972. He then began working for Eldon Moss, on Eldon’s dairy farm, and continued there until the time of Eldon’s death in 1991, he then truly retired, at the age of 91. Gill was a member of the American Legion # and the Clarksville Masonic Lodge #668.

Gill’s family includes his wife of 75 years, Rosa; sons, George Wells, John and wife, Carolyn Wells and Delmar Wells all of Iowa City, daughters, Anna and her husband, Bob Baker of Wagner, OK and Susan Wells of Iowa City, grandchildren, Steve Wells, Gilbert Baker and Breezeda (Breezy) Baker, two great-grandchildren, Ashley Hair and Nicholas Beale along with numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Emory, five sisters and four brothers. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Gill’s service and his family.
