Jean Costa, 82, of Iowa City died peacefully Saturday, October 13th, 2012 at Windmill Manor Care Center.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10am, Friday, October 26th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father John Spiegel officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, October 25th from 4 to 7pm at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice, the City High School Band or New Horizons Band.

Jean was born May 27, 1930 in Iowa City the daughter of Raymond and Helen Lawrence Slavata. She was a graduate of the University of Iowa, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta and the Scottish Highlanders. Jean married Michael “Mick” Costa on October 22, 1955 at St. Mary’s Church.

Jean was a secretary at City High School for many years, and later was employed with the University of Iowa Scottish Highlanders and AJ August Clothing Store.

Jean was a member of St. Mary’s Church, New Horizons Band and a past member of the Legion of Mary. Jean enjoyed being involved with the Rock and Read Program at Helen Lemme Elementary School. To Jean her family was the light of her life.

Survivors include her daughter Susie (Tom) Thrams of Iowa City and their son, Jamie (Kate) of East Lansing, MI; her son Jim (Patty) Fransen of Shawnee, KS and their son, Dustin of Tempe, AZ.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her sister and brother-in-law, Edith and Arnold Fransen.
