Gwendolyn (Trout) Stone, 83, of Solon, Iowa died peacefully Wednesday morning with her family beside her.

Gwen was born August 14, 1929 in Cherryvale, Kansas, the daughter of Edwin P. and Edna (Skaggs) Trout. She graduated from Independence (Kansas) Junior College in 1949 and shortly thereafter left Kansas to visit her cousin Colonel Maury Holden at Fort Lewis near Seattle, Washington. There, she met her future husband, Milton D. Stone, Jr. a West Point graduate and infantry captain. They were married August 29, 1950 in Independence, Kansas. She and her husband lived in Fairbanks, Alaska; Appleton, Wisconsin; Columbus, Georgia; and South Pittsburgh, Tennessee before finally settling in Montgomery, Alabama where Gwen lived for 45 years. In 2002, she moved to Iowa City, Iowa to be closer to her grandchildren and in 2010, to Solon, Iowa.

Gwen worked as secretary to the president of the Alabama Farm Bureau and later as a medical transcriptionist for Drs. Weinrib and Schwartz. She served as the first woman vestry member of the Church of the Holy Comforter and was also active in St. Anne’s Guild and the Junior League. She and a friend co-authored a textbook of Alabama history that was used in some of the state’s elementary schools. She was a passionate reader, bridge player and supporter of the arts.

She was loved by her family and admired by all who knew her.

Gwen is survived by her sons, Edwin Stone (Mary) of Iowa City and Milton Stone (Penny) of Birmingham, Alabama; and, her grandchildren Nicholas Stone of Atlanta, Georgia and Carolyn Stone of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Gwen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother Marvin Trout.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to either the Hancher Auditorium at the University of Iowa or Iowa City Hospice.
