Betty M. Hebl, 68, of 3811 Hebl Avenue SW, died Sunday, November 23, 2003 at Sentara-Leigh Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia following a sudden illness.

Betty was born October 11, 1935 in Iowa City, the daughter of Russell and Edith Herring Scott. She was a 1953 graduate of City High School and in 1956 graduated from the Mercy School of Nursing. She married Maynard G. Hebl on October 25, 1956 at St. Wenceslaus Church in Iowa City.

Betty was raised in the city, but farmed with her husband for over 44 years in Union Township, Johnson County.

Her nursing career began at the Washington County Hospital and she later joined the Orthopedic Clinic with Dr. Steindler in Iowa City. In December, 1956 she joined Mercy Hospital in orthopedics. In 1957, Maynard and Betty moved to Ft. Smith, Arkansas, where he was serving in the US Army. While at Ft.Smith she worked as a nurse in obstetrics.

Following their return to Iowa City, she returned to Mercy Hospital where she was a nurse on the med-surgical floors and later in the Emergency Room, where she worked for 25 years, retiring in 1994.

Betty loved her children and especially enjoyed spoiling her grandchildren. She attended all of her children’s sporting events and was an avid West High supporter. She was well- known for her Christmas cookies which she distributed to area friends and businesses. Betty and Maynard received an award for assisting in the cleaning of Kinnick Stadium over 100 times while their children attended West High School.

She was involved in the community and in beef-promotion activities. In 2000 Betty received the Cattlewoman of the Year Award. She was a member of the Johnson County Cattlewomen’s Association, where she helped to coordinate the Johnson County Beef Queen Contest and the Johnson County Scholarship Program, and had served on the Johnson County Fair Board. Betty was one of the founders of Beef Promotions of Iowa and had spent countless hours promoting beef at both the local and state level. At the Iowa State Fair Betty assisted with the Beef Quarter’s Restaurant.

Betty was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, the Iowa City Booster Club of which she was a past president, Johnson County Farm Bureau and the Hills Town and Country Club. Maynard and Betty were recipients of the Friends of Education Award.

Her children said, “Their mom was one of the hardest working and ambitious women that you would ever meet. She devoted her entire life to the three things that were the most important to her; her family, her nursing career and supporting the agriculture industry.”

Betty is survived by her husband, Maynard;
Seven children, Lori Wildman and her husband Jim of Golden Valley, Minnesota, Marlys Hebl of North Liberty, Master Sgt. Dennis Hebl and his wife Lisa of Coralville and their daughters Melanie and her boyfriend Nathan, Brittany and Jamie, Kenneth Hebl and his wife Carole Ann of Oxford and their daughter Sara and a baby due in February 2004, Karen Shemanski and her husband Rick of Solon and their daughters Shelby and Kelsey, Scott Hebl and his wife Nancy of Hills and their children Nicole and Tyler, and Maj. Kevin and wife Robin of Fayetteville, North Carolina and their children Kyle, Ryan and Abigail;
Her brother, Kenneth R. Scott of Norfolk, Virginia and her sister, Mary Lou Johnson of Gainesville, Virginia; Her mother-in-law Mary C. Hebl; three sister-in-laws and six brother-in-laws; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her father-in-law Elmer Hebl.
