Wayne V. Paustian, 79, of 1307 Pine Street in Iowa City, died peacefully in his home on Thursday, November 20, 2003.

Wayne was born August 15, 1924 in Crystal Township in Tama County, Iowa, the son of Ernest & Elsie (Thede) Paustian. Wayne attended county schools and graduated from Traer High School in 1942. Wayne served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 – 1946 as a Pharmaceutical Mate, 2nd class. He married Shirley J. King on June 11, 1949 in Gladbrook, Iowa. He attended the University of Iowa, receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in 1950. In 1951, he received his graduate degree in Physical Therapy. Wayne worked as a physical therapist at the Veteran’s Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska from 1951 – 1952, then moving to Iowa City in 1952. Wayne then worked at the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center for 32 years, retiring in 1984.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Iowa Cityand Iowa City Masonic Lodge #4. Wayne was an avid hunter, enjoyed fishing and was a loyal sports fan.
His greatest joy was spending time with family.

He is survived by his wife Shirley of Iowa City; two daughters, Susan Manas & her husband Arturo of Rockford, Illinois and Joan Dolezal & her husband Steven of Cedar Rapids; one brother, Lennie Paustian & his wife Joanne of Pisgah Forest, North Carolina; four grandchildren, Jennifer Dolezal Rhodes, Steven Dolezal, Allison Manas and A.J. Manas; three aunts, Eunice Ladehoff, Ilene Rosenberger and Berneda Thede, all of Gladbrook and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

His parents and an infant brother preceded him in death.

The family would like to extend their gratitude for the care & compassion Wayne received from Dr. J. Scott Ferguson.
