Raymond Mavis, 83, of 4344 Sand Road SE, died at home Sunday, November 16, 2003 after a long illness.

Raymond was born on August 10, 1920, the son of Fred and Frances Swaner Mavis. Ray was united in marriage to Ruby Schenk on June 28, 1942 in Kahoka, MO. She died in 1996.

He owned and operated Ray Mavis Trucking, a commercial trash hauling business for over 50 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows. Ray, known to some as “Uncle Pike” was well known for growing and selling fern peonies. Ray loved vegetable gardening and enjoyed the time he spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Survivors include two daughters, Karen Regennitter and her husband Roger of Tipton and Judy Swartzendruber and her husband Dellis of Anamosa; two sons, James and Robert, both of Iowa City, ten grandchildren, Laura, Marvin, Rhonda, Mark, Carrie, Martin, Amy, Clint, Darren, and Kevin; and sixteen great grandchildren and one expected great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ruby, twelve brothers and sisters, and a grandson, Jeffrey Allen.
