William "Bill" C. Coonrod, 91 of Iowa City, died Thursday, June 28, 2012 at Briarwood Health Care Center after a short illness.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11am on Saturday, July 14, 2012 at Lensing Funeral Home, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, with entombment to follow at the Memory Gardens Mausoleum.
Mr. Coonrod was born September 4, 1920, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Ira and Winifred Coonrod. He married Evelyn Hawkins July 3, 1952, in Mason City. They moved to Iowa City in 1967, where he worked for the VA Hospital as Senior Cook until his retirement. He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. He served his country in the Coast Guard during World War II from December 8, 1941 until December 23, 1945, having been at Pearl Harbor, Saipan, Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
Survivors include two daughters, Chadyeanne Scesniak (Thomas) of Schaumburg, Illinois; Nancy Sparks (William) of San Antonio, Florida; and a son, John Hawkins (Carol) of Davenport, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 7 great-great grandchildren; a sister Faye Fisher (Robert) of Waterloo, Iowa. Preceding him in death were his parents, a daughter, Carol Sheppard; brother, John Coonrod, sisters, Shirley Damon and Iris Jensen. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews; his long and loyal friends, George McCune and Rose Meer, together with their families and many wonderful friends.
