Linda Greene, 64, died June 21, 2012, with her family and many of her friends by her side in Iowa City, Iowa. A memorial service will be held in Gainesville, Florida at a later date.
Linda was born May 3, 1948 in Rockford, Illinois to Howard and Evelyn Layng.
Against very serious odds, Linda battled cancer for nearly four years. Her determination was not a surprise to those who knew her.
Linda dedicated her life to teaching elementary school to children with special needs in Gainesville, Florida and at Lucas Elementary in Iowa City, Iowa. Anyone who saw her with children knew immediately that it was her calling. Her primary mission in life was to help others aim higher and reach their goals.
Linda’s integrity and unbounded enthusiasm for living a full life were the natural outcome of the love and care she found with her family and friends. She is survived by her parents; her husband, Barry Greene; her three sisters, Mary Alice Copeland, Jane Sigl, and Sara Boyd all of Florida; her two daughters, SaraJane and her husband Jack Weinstein of Beacon Falls, Connecticut and Lyn Curtis of Atlanta, Georgia. Linda also had two stepdaughters, Stephanie Greene and Ingrid Bowler, both of Jacksonville, Florida.
Linda treasured her role of being a mother and grandmother. We will all remember her lively stories about her beloved grandchildren: Isaac, Reuben, Levi, Ben, Ava, and Charlie. She had seven nieces and nephews, and each one thought that he or she was Linda’s favorite. In fact, her favorite was always the child in her embrace. She understood the strength a loving family provides.
Linda fought to the end to express her affection and appreciation for the care others had given her.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center of the University of Iowa, P.O. Box 4550, Iowa City, IA 52244-4550 or online at www.givetoiowa.org.
