Louise A. “Lou” Canney, 78, of 2423 Walden Road, Iowa City, died at Walden Place, Friday, November 14, 2003 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Lou was born July 3, 1925, the daughter of Charles and Leona (Riddle) Chehak. On December 26, 1946, she married John “Jack” Canney in Cedar Rapids. She graduated from McKinley High School in Cedar Rapids. She was a telephone operator at Northwestern Bell for 28 1/2 years, retiring in 1982. She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, the American Business Women’s Association where she was named “Woman Of The Year” for two years. She was also a Iowa City Jay-C-Ette, of which she served a term as President, a member of the Iowa City American Legion Auxiliary, Telephone Pioneers, a volunteer at Mercy Hospital Gift Shop, and was a Democratic Party poll watcher. She enjoyed flowers, flower gardening but above all, her greatest joy was time spent with family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank Iowa City Hospice and Mercy Private Care for their devoted
care and compassion of Lou. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends, as well as her community of friends at Walden Place.

Her loving family includes three daughters, Diane Rios and her husband Roy of North Liberty, Dee Aupperle and her husband John of Iowa City, and Charlene Canney of Washington, Iowa; a sister Mardy Erlacher and her husband Bernie of Washington, Illinois; a sister-in-law, “Lou” Louise Chehak of Audubon, Iowa; three grandchildren, Jennifer Erickson & her husband Kelly, Justin Rios & his wife Angie, and Nick Aupperle; and three great grandchildren, Olivia Erickson, Emma Erickson, and Kalen Rios; three step-grandchildren, Mykel Erickson of Illinois, Tavian Noard & Blaize Noard, both of North Liberty and her loyal dog “E”.

Her parents, her husband, Jack, and a brother, Donald, all preceded her in death.
