Harold H. Stager, 87, formerly of Iowa City died peacefully Wednesday, June 20th at the English Valley Care Center in North English.
Funeral Services will be held at 10am Saturday June 23, 2012 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service with Rev. Gail Mitchell officiating. Burial with military honors will be at the Stanwood Cemetery in Stanwood, Iowa. Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 7pm at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.
Harold was born November 29, 1924 in Buffalo, New York and raised in Washington DC. Harold joined the US Navy when he was 17. He served in the South Pacific for sixteen months. Harold was a disabled veteran with six battles stars. Following the war he returned to school and moved to Iowa in 1950 where he attended the University of Iowa.
He married Beverly Burgess in 1950. They had two children from their union, Max and Janet. Beverly died in 1985. In 1987 Harold married Sally Wolfe. Sally died in December, 2011.Harold was employed at the University of Iowa Power Plant and Electric Shop for over 36 years, retiring in 1986.
Harold served as President of the Iowa City Federation of Labor and held offices with the Local AFSCME12. He was a Co-chair for two different precincts in the Democratic Party for many years and was an original board member of the Johnson County Heritage Trust. He served on the Johnson County Compensation Board and the Senior Center Commission. At the Senior Center Harold served on the Council of Elders and volunteered as a greeter and was active with AARP. He initiated a program called Soap-Box Sound-Off.
Harold liked to read, especially books on history and political science. His memberships include the American Legion, the Eagles, the Kiwanis, the Elks, Disabled American Veterans and the Smithsonian Institute.
In 2002 Harold and Sally moved to Florida. Following Sally’s death in 2011 he returned to Iowa to be near his daughter and her family.
Harold is survived by his son Max Stager and his fiancé, Angela of Colorado Springs; his daughter Janet (Bob) Donohoe of Parnell; 8 grandchildren, Amanda, Nathan, Corey (Keith), Kelly (Sean), Zack, Mick, Kaylee, Elizabeth; 4 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents Allen and Alice Hardee Stager, his wives, Beverly and Sally, a brother and sister.
