Janet Bridget Jones Thompson died peacefully June 13th after an eleven year struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.
The family will hold a small graveside service at the Old Welsh Cemetery, Sharon Center Iowa. The family will hold a Memorial Service in Wichita, Kansas this fall. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Janet’s name to one of these organizations: Youth Development Services, 3033 W. 2nd St. North, Wichita, KS 67203 or Independent Living and Resource Center, 2120 East 13th Street North, Wichita, KS 67214.
Janet was born June 20, 1936 in Williamsburg, Iowa, to Phillip Leslie and Mary Margaret (Neal) Jones. She was preceded in death by her parents, by her husband, John M. Thompson, by her sister Joan Soucek, and niece, Jennifer Sagar.
Janet is survived by her son, Sam, his wife Robyn Robbins, and their children Caitlin and Walker Thompson, siblings Peg Day, Cari Malone, Tom Jones and his wife Pat, and many nieces and nephews.
Janet worked to support equal rights for women, women in the arts, for civil rights, the right for individuals to live independently, and for numerous liberal political candidates. She was a fierce advocate for the disabled and disadvantaged and modeled this value at every level of her life. Two of her proudest achievements were helping to found the Independent Living Center in Wichita, Kansas, and being awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from Interhab, a group of her colleagues.
