Charlene Thane Weaver, 24, of Phoenix, Arizona and formerly of Wellman, died Thursday, November 6, 2003 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix from injuries suffered in an automobile accident in Phoenix on Saturday, November 1st.

Charlene was born June 18, 1979 in Fairfield, Iowa, the daughter of Kenneth & Paula Lynn Brereton Weaver. She graduated from Mid-Prairie High School in 1997 and gave the commencement speech. Charlene attended Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa and graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Political Science and World History. In 2001, she moved to Phoenix, Arizona as part of the Teach For America Program. She taught 7th and 8th grade Special Education at Ignacio Conchos Elementary School. She was a strict disciplinarian who taught her students chess and quilting. In May of 2003, she was awarded the Sue Lehmann Award for Excellence In Teaching. During the same month she received her Master’s of Education from Arizona State University. After teaching, she took a position at the University of Phoenix as an academic advisor, and tutored children in the evenings. Charlene was passionate about global politics, rock climbing, literature, quilting, and education. She aspired to become the first female President of the United States.

Survivors include a sister, Kimberly Kopf & her husband Mike of Iowa City; her parents, Kenneth & Paula Weaver of Wayland, Iowa; a niece Annika and a nephew Hunter.
