Jean O’Neill, 87, lifelong Iowa City resident, died Wednesday at her home with her daughters at her side.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 10:00 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. Father John Spiegel will officiate.

Visitation will be Sunday from 3:00 – 7:00 pm at Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City.
A parish rosary will begin at 2:30 with a parish vigil service beginning at 6:30 pm.
Private burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Instead of flowers, the family kindly requests memorials to The Regina Foundation.

Jean was born March 17, 1925 in Iowa City, the daughter of Edward and Marie (Buck) Burger. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School and in 1947 graduated from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing.
Jean married John E. O’Neill January 21, 1948 in Iowa City. The couple made their home at 1038 Muscatine Avenue in Iowa City - where they raised their 5 girls. She was a registered nurse for 43 years, working at Mercy Hospital, the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, at Lindley Nursing Home and for Dr. Albright. Jean retired from nursing in 1990.

She was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s parish, was an avid reader and a devoted Tuesday gambler!
Jean and her sister were devoted Iowa Hawkeye football fans and were season ticket holders for over 50 years. During retirement, Jean volunteered countless hours at Iowa City Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, St. Mary’s Church and the Free Lunch Program.

Jean is survived by her children, Kathleen Murphy (Tim) of St. Louis, Susie Schneider (Neil) of Brewster, New York, Mary Gilroy (John) of Iowa City, Shawn Lynch (Joe) of Iowa City and Patrice Gee (Mike) of Omaha; sisters, Eunice ‘Sam” DeFrance (Gerald) and Ruth Woodhouse, all of Iowa City; grandchildren, Bradley, Katie, Justin (Melissa), Joshua, Jacob, Jennifer, Michael, Ryan, Sean, Abbey Jean, David and Katie Grace; great-grandson, Caleb John and many nieces and nephews.

Jean was preceded in death by her mother, Marie Burger, an aunt, Sister Mary Joseph Aloysius BVM and her loving husband John.
