Helen E. Houser, 95, died peacefully Monday February 27th at Mercy Hospital following an extended illness.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at1 10:30am Friday, March 2, 2012 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with Father Michael Phillips officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 7 pm at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, where a rosary will be recited at 7pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Helen E. Houser Memorial Fund.
Helen was born May 5, 1916 in Iowa City, the daughter of Anton and Elizabeth Cihler Shimon. She was a graduate of Solon High School. On September 16, 1935 Helen married Walter Houser in Iowa City. Walter died in 2003.
Helen and Walter were lifelong residents of the Iowa City and Newport Township area.
Helen was a member of St. Wenceslaus Church and the Altar and Rosary Society. She enjoyed baking, especially kolaches, gardening and caring for children.
Helen is survived by her four children, Woodrow “Woody” Houser of Iowa City, Anton “Tony” (Gina) Houser of Montrose, Bonnie (LaVerne “Butch”) Forbes of Iowa City and Lawrence “Larry” (Christa) Houser of Buffalo, Iowa; 21 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son William, one granddaughter Brenda, one great granddaughter Miranda; three siblings Eleanor Huff, Donald Shimon and Louis Shimon.
