Emery Kleinschmidt, 82, of Kalona, ended his life on Friday, September 19, 2003.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 23, 2003, at Sharon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Doug Cue officiating. A luncheon will follow the service. Graveside Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Oakland Cemetery, Iowa City. Friends may call at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City on Monday from 2 to 8 p.m. where the family will be present from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be directed to Sharon Center United Methodist Church.

Emery was the son of John and Addie Reynolds Kleinschmidt and was born on June 17, 1921, in Johnson County, Iowa. As a child, he attended Sharon Elementary School #3 which was locally known as Hartsock School. On January 21, 1942, he was united in marriage to Helen Hein at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Iowa City, Iowa.

For 60 years, Emery and Helen resided on their farm in Sharon Township, rural Kalona and in 2001 moved to the Pleasantview Retirement Residence in Kalona. Emery worked for the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center for over 17 years, retiring in 1986.

Survivors include his loving wife Helen; three daughters, Marilyn and her husband Jim Mills of Muscatine, Charlene Onnen of Kalona, and Elaine and her husband Garry McCune of Cedar Rapids; a son, Stephen Kleinschmidt of Wellman; a brother, John Kleinschmidt of Iowa City; three sisters, Bessie Capper of Wellman, Marguerite Plecker of Wellman, and Leona Buchmayer of Iowa City; twelve grandchildren, Michael, Martin, Matthew, Travis, Jesse, Christopher, Zachary, Jennifer, Britannia, Courtney, Cameron, and Chloe; 6 great-grandchildren, Julia, Jared, Andrew, Katelyn, Marcus, and Autumn.

Emery was preceded in death by his parents, his son Charles Kleinschmidt in June of this year; two brothers, Joseph and Roy; and an infant grandson, Shane.

Emery farmed the land he loved. His love for his land continued by way of raising a garden, fruit orchard, and a Christmas tree farm. He was meticulous about his tools and machinery. Emery always loved his wife, Helen and his family meant everything to him. He was always there with a helping hand in their time of need.
