Mary Rakoff 1925 - 2003

Mary Rakoff, 77, of 1431 Marcy Street in Iowa City, died Sunday, August 17, 2003 near Batavia, Iowa from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

Services will be held Friday, August 22, 2003 at 2:00 pm at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City with Charity Rowley officiating. Friends may call Friday from 1:00pm until service time at the funeral home. Memorials are designated to the Iowa City Animal Shelter or The Humane Society. Burial of cremains will be private.

Mary was born September 30, 1925 in Wagoner, Oklahoma, the daughter of Ray B. & Addie B. Miller. Mary graduated from high school in Tulsa, Oklahoma and in 1970 received her bachelors degree in elementary education from Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa. She later worked extensively towards a masters degree in social work at the University of Iowa. Mary taught elementary school in Batavia, Iowa from 1970 to 1973. She married Henry Rakoff on October 21, 1950 in Laramie, Wyoming. The couple later divorced.

Mary was an income maintenance worker for the Johnson County Department of Human Services, achieving her 25th year of service in 2003. She was a member of Unitarian Universalist Society in Iowa City and was very active in the Democratic party in the 1970’s. In 1976, Mary ran for the public office of clerk of court in Jefferson County, Iowa. She was a true supporter and advocate of the Iowa City Animal Shelter and volunteered her time there with her grandchildren.

Mary is survived by her children, Alan Rakoff & his wife Maria Eugenia of Peoria, Illinois, Steven Rakoff of Ft. Worth, Texas and Tracy Madril & her husband James of Maputo, Mozambique, Africa; four grandchildren, Victoria Rakoff, Joshua Rakoff, David Madril and Rachel Madril; one sister, Helen Ann Davis & her husband Windle of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Ray Bryan Miller.
