David Goodwin, who died August 14, 2003 at his home on Indian Lookout, was born in Iowa City, September 23, 1919 to William Thomas and Gertrude Chauveau Goodwin.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service is handling the arrangements.
He started his education at University Elementary School, among the first students in the “Old Dental Buliding” in the Pentacrest. In 1937, he graduated from the Iowa City high school and in 1941 from the University of Iowa.
He was awarded the Lydia Roberts Fellowship for graduate studies at Columbia University for 1941-1942. Following graduation from the University Of Iowa College Of Medicine in 1945, his internship and residency were at Columbia Presbyterian hospital in New York, NY. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corp during World War II.
His professional life was devoted to bio-medical research at Cornell Medical School in New York City, Case Western Reserve University and the University Of California Medical School in San Francisco.
Since returning to Iowa City, he has worked to save historic landmarks. He is known for his efforts to preserve the integrity of Indian Lookout. His research about the area was published in the Palimpset and led to its being named eligible for the Historic Register.
A fitting and welcome memorial to David Goodwin would be an increased awareness and respect for the natural beauty around us and an active determination to preserve it.
David was survived by his sister, Ellinor Green and her husband Robert of Flagstaff, AZ, one niece, Rachel Wilson and her husband Stephen of Flagstaff, AZ, one nephew, Robert C. Green of Littleton, CO. He is also survived by one grandniece and two grandnephews.
