Maurice “Joe” Brennan, 73, of Iowa City died peacefully Saturday July 16th at Mercy Hospital.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10am Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father John Spiegel officiating. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 7pm at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the University of Iowa Foundation for the College of Dentistry, Mercy Hospital Foundation for Diabetes Education or to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Joe was born September 27, 1937 in Emmetsburg, Iowa, the son of Maurice Joseph and Margaret Marie Dunigan Brennan. He was a graduate of Emmetsburg Catholic High School and the University of South Dakota. On June 13, 1959 Joe married Arlene Chapman in Emmetsburg.

Joe was employed at the University of Iowa for 43 years, retiring in 2003 as Associate Dean of Finance in the College of Dentistry.
His memberships include St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the American Dental Association, the American Association of Dental Schools and the Iowa City Elks Club. Joe had served in the US Army Reserves.

Joe is survived by his loving wife of 52 years and their son Terry (Susan) Brennan of Tonka Bay, MN; two grandsons, Kieran Joseph Brennan and Dillon James Brennan; three brothers, Bill (Lorna) Brennan of Emmetsburg, Chuck ( Mary) Brennan of Kansas City, KS and Don( Katie) Brennan of Red Oak, Iowa; brother and sisters-in-law, Dolores (Robert) Tanner of Clear Lake, Juanita Helmke, Ronald (Sandi) Chapman and Marietta (Michael) Flannegan, all of Emmetsburg; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one nephew.
