Mary Ellen Ewing Engelhardt, 93 of Iowa City passed away on Thursday, August 14th, 2003 at the Solon Nursing Care Center in Solon, Iowa. She was born on December 21, 1909 in Rushville, Illinois to the late Ralph Joseph and Annie Settles Ewing. She was the second oldest of their eight children. From early childhood Mary was raised on a farm in Rushville, Illinois, moving to Webster, Iowa at the age of 12. She graduated from high school in 1928 from Webster High School in a class of 9.

She was married to Gilbert M. Engelhardt on January 30, 1940 in Iowa City, IA.
She was an Iowa City resident for 60 plus years and a member of the First United Methodist church in Iowa City for over 58 years. She was a volunteer "cuddler" at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics putting in over 1000 hours volunteer hours. She was an excellent seamstress and worked several years doing alterations from her home.

She is survived by two daughters Donna J.Wilkinson & husband Jim of Martinez, California and Nancy A. Heifner & husband Ernie of Chicago, Illinois; four surviving grandchildren: Jamie Ann Liggett & husband Gary of Lafayette, CA; Jeffrey Wilkinson & wife Elyza of San Francisco, CA; Rob McConnell & wife Britt of Iowa City, IA; Melissa Brodigan & husband Brad of Oak Park, Illinois; one great grandson Maxfield Wilkinson; two siblings: Margaret King and James R. Ewing & wife Aileen of Rushville, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert who died on May 25, 1987, five siblings (Mildred Walter; Jane Black; Glen Ewing; Don Ewing; Bill Ewing) and one great grandson, Scott S. Wilkinson.

The family requests in lieu of flowers that all donations go to Iowa City Hospice.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 6th, 2003 at the First Methodist Church
