Anne Gorishek Kraus, 94, of Coralville, Iowa died Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at Windmill Manor Nursing Home. Funeral Services will be held at 11am Saturday, July 2 at Bradley Funeral Home, 313 10th Street, North Chicago, IL 60064. Local arrangements are with Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service.
She was born in Waukegan, Illinois on July 18, 1916 to Marija Gregorich Gorishek and Anton Gorishek who were Slovenian immigrants from Austria-Hungary. She resided for most of her life in North Chicago and Zion (Beach Park), Illinois, moving to Iowa in 2006.
Anne attended Sawyer Business College and worked as a patent law secretary for Banning and Banning in Chicago. She met Andrew—the man she would marry— on the North Shore train when they were both commuters from North Chicago into the city for their jobs. Their wedding was on April 19, 1952, and they were married for 57 years until Andrew died in 2009.
She liked to sing in church and community choirs, play the piano, garden, and cook, especially the ethnic Slovenian foods of her mother’s homeland like potica (nut bread) and ajmoht (soup). She was skilled at many needle crafts including sewing, embroidery, knitting, and crocheting.
Anne is survived by a sister, Mary Smith, of Elon College, North Carolina, and two daughters, Anne Marie Kraus of Iowa City, Iowa, and Susan (Peter) Bins of Sheboygan, Wisconsin. She also leaves five grandchildren: Michael (Jessica) Kelzenberg of Pasadena, California, Jennifer (Nick) Lorch of Iowa City, Iowa, Sarah (Pat) Marshall of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, Ellen Bins (fiance Evan Nordgren) of Madison, Wisconsin, and Andrew Bins of Sheboygan, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her husband Andrew and by two brothers, Tony and Frank.
Memorials to Atrium Village in Hills, Iowa would be appreciated.
