Calvin L. Cumerlato, 53, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, died Thursday, August 7, 2003, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral Services will be held 3:00 p.m. Thursday, August 14, 2003, at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service with the Rev. Judy Gingerich officiating. Burial will be at St. Vincent’s Cemetery, Riverside. The family will greet friends after 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Family Hospice and Palliative Care, 250 Mt. Lebanon Road, Suite 302, Pittsburgh, PA 15234. Cal was born March 29, 1950, in Chicago, llinois, the son of Clayton and Adeline Resner Cumerlato. He married Carole Kron on August 11, 1979, in Iowa City, Iowa. Cal graduated from the University of Iowa where he received his master’s degree in geology in 1983.

Cal began his career as a geologist with the Iowa Geological Survey in Iowa City. He later worked as a geophysicist for the Bureau of Mines in Minneapolis, Minnesota and the Minerals Management Service in New Orleans, Louisiana. Most recently, he was employed as a physical scientist for the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. During his career, Cal authored numerous articles for professional journals and was awarded a patent for his invention of the pneumatic interlocking geophone. He was proud to have been part of the MSHA team summoned to Washington,D.C. during the 9/11 crisis.

Cal was an avid fly fisherman and combined his love of travel with this passion. He enjoyed reading and the daily challenge of the New York Times crossword. He was an accomplished cook and especially enjoyed baking for his family and friends during the holidays. His quiet demeanor and dry wit will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Carole Kron; his daughter, Caryn Link and her husband Chris of Roeland Park, Kansas; his mother-in-law, Leona Kron of Iowa City; his brother-in-law, Ted Kron and his wife Kathy of Iowa City; four sisters-in-law, Jeanne Berndt and her husband John of Cary, North Carolina, Pat Boettger and her husband Bill of Danville, California, Marcia Mundy and her husband Dick of Cedar Rapids, and Julie Bruntz and her husband John of West Des Moines; and thirteen nieces and nephews.

His parents, his brother, Bill, and his father-in-law, Cleo Kron, preceded him in death.
