Mildred “Milly” Kenney Flynn, 92, of Iowa City and formerly of Riverside peacefully died Saturday, June 4, 2011 at Briarwood Healthcare Center.
Memorial Services will be held at 11 am, Saturday, June 11, 2011 at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City, where the family will greet friends after 10am. Burial will be at the Riverside Public Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the charity of your choice.
Milly was born in Riverside, IA on August 4, 1918, the daughter of Frank and Leona Holderness Kenney. She graduated from Riverside High School in 1935, and attended Iowa Wesleyan College. In 1938 she married Delbert Flynn and to this union seven children were born. Delbert died in 1994.
Milly had many interests including nature and music. She was a former church organist and continued to play organ well into her nineties. Her love of her little garden place “the dacha” in Riverside was legendary. She spent many days there enjoying the sun, the birds, the wildflowers and the serenity and peace that comes from just being outside. Most of all she loved, enjoyed, and was very proud of her family.
Milly is survived by seven children, Judy Kiefer of Kalona, Linda Wilkinson of Moline, IL, Diane Flynn of Albuquerque, NM, Patricia Thomann of Iowa City, Nancy (Richard) Schmidt of Salt Lake City, UT, James (Nancy) Flynn of Washington,IA and Pamela Flynn of Colorado Springs; 16 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren; her sister Gertrude (Hubert) Rath of Lake City, FL; sisters-in-law Lorene Kenney of Burt, IA and Melbarene Flynn, San Diego, CA and brother-in-law Ward Flynn of Casper, Wyoming.
Milly was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brother Lester “Bud” Kenney; brother and sister-in-law Kenneth and Jeanne Kenney; sister Dorothy Kenney Taunton; and son-in-law, Anton “Ginger” Kiefer.
The family wishes to thank all who cared for Milly- especially Dr. Geralyn Zuercher and Milly’s special friend, Vladimir Kostelovsky.
